چکیده

Dynamic multileaf collimator (DMLC)-intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is used to delivery intensity-modulated beams using an MLC, with the leaves in motion. DMLC-IMRT requires the conversion of a radiation fluence map into a leaf sequence file that controls the movement of the MLC while the beam is on. It is imperative that the fluence map delivered using the leaf sequence file be as close as possible to the fluence map generated by the dose optimization algorithm, while satisfying hardware constraints of the delivery system. Optimization of the leafsequencing algorithm has been the subject of several recent investigations. In this work, we present a systematic study of the optimization of leaf sequencing algorithms for dynamic multileaf collimator beam delivery and provide rigorous mathematical proofs of optimized leaf sequence settings in terms of monitor unit (MU) efficiency under most common leaf movement constraints that include leaf interdigitation constraint. Our analytical analysis shows that leaf sequencing based on unidirectional movement of the MLC leaves is as MU efficient as bi-directional movement of the MLC leaves. Submitted to: Phys. Med. Biol. Realization of Intensity Modulated Radiation Fields Using Multileaf Collimators

In the treatment of cancer using high energetic radiation the problem arises how to irradiate the tumor without damaging the healthy tissue in the immediate vicinity. In order to do this as efficiently as possible intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is used. A modern way to modulate the homogeneous radiation field delivered by an external accelerator is to use a multileaf collimator in...

Validation of calculations for electrons modulated with conventional photon multileaf collimators.

Treating shallow tumors with a homogeneous dose while simultaneously minimizing the dose to distal critical organs remains a challenge in radiotherapy. One promising approach is modulated electron radiotherapy (MERT). Due to the scattering properties of electron beams, the commercially provided secondary and tertiary photon collimation systems are not conducive for electron beam delivery when s...
